黄河滔滔兮

The Yellow River is roaring

淮水汤汤，

and the Huai River is raging,

燧皇钻火兮

Suihuang brought forth the fire

泽披四方，

and his blessings spread across the land,

天命玄鸟兮

Heaven bade the dark bird to come down

降而生商。

and bear the Shang.

阏伯筑台，

Ebo built a terrace

观测天象；

to observe the celestial phenomenon;

王亥训牛，

Wang Hai tamed oxen,

贸易初张。

and initiated trade for the first time.

为国为都，

Shangqiu is the capital，

帝喾成汤。

from Emperor Kù to his descendent Chengtang,

微子封宋，

Weizi was enfeoffed in Song

奉祀先商。

to uphold the sacrificial rites of the former Shang.

孔子祖籍，

Shangqiu, the ancestral home of Confucius,

半部《论语》治天下；

whose Analects is vital for state governance;

庄子故里，

Shangqiu, Zhuangzi’s hometown,

一篇《逍遥》诵千秋。

whose“Enjoyment in Untroubled Ease” was recited for thousands of years.

惠子善辩，

Huizi was good at arguing,

墨子非攻。

Mozi denouncing unjust wars.

百花齐放，

A hundred flowers bloomed,

诸子争鸣。

a hundred schools of thought flourished.

陈胜举事，

When Chen Sheng raised his uprising banner,

燕雀安知鸿鹄之志哉？

how could sparrows fathom the ambition of the swan?

刘邦斩蛇，

When Liu Bang was chopping snake,

大风起兮云飞扬！

a great wind rises, oh! The clouds are driven away.

浩荡汉风，

The grand Han style

雕镂历史。

is carved in history.

梁园锦绣，

Liangyuan’s beautiful scenery

氤氲在华亭

was exhibited in the grand pavilion

桥水之间；

and bridge over the water;

千古清辉，

the eternal glory,

激荡在宏辞大赋之中。

is shining in grand poetry of men of letters.

重温木兰诗

When I appreciate the song of Mulan once again

拜谒张巡祠，

and pay homage to Zhang Xun Memorial Temple,

翰墨惊雷，

their heroism strikes me like thunder and storm,

訇然肺腑。

echoing profoundly in my heart.

范公坐馆，

Fan Zhongyan, seated in his hall,

先忧后乐从兹起，

his legacy of“be the first to worry about the nation’s woes and the last to share in its prosperity”

遗响古城湖畔。

still resonate by the ancient city’s lakes.

明清骚客皆远去，

The literati of Ming and Qing Dynasty have long departed,

独有桃花相映红。

yet the peach blossoms blush alone.

但进南湖，

Once I step into South Lake,

四时浏览皆如画；

the scenery of it is like a painting;

只入古城，

Once I enter the ancient city,

一路俯仰尽为诗。

every glance becomes a verse of poetry.
